Every month, ASUS owners contact our Perth workshop convinced their battery is failing because it refuses to charge past 80 percent, or sometimes 60. Before you book anything: there’s a good chance nothing is wrong with your laptop at all.
The battery care mode nobody remembers enabling
The MyASUS app includes a battery care feature with three profiles. Full capacity charges to 100 percent. Balanced stops at 80. Maximum lifespan stops at 60. The feature exists for a good reason: lithium batteries age fastest when held at full charge, so capping the level meaningfully extends battery life, especially for laptops that live on the charger.
The catch: the setting sometimes gets enabled during setup, by another user, or after an update, and then sits there quietly. The laptop dutifully stops at 80 percent, and it looks exactly like a fault.
The check takes 30 seconds: open MyASUS, go to Customization then Power & Performance (naming varies slightly by version), and look at Battery Care Mode. If it’s set to Balanced or Maximum lifespan, that’s your whole mystery. Set it to Full capacity if you want 100 percent, though for a desk-bound laptop, leaving the cap on is genuinely good for the battery.
When it actually is the battery
The care mode explains a charge that stops at a neat threshold. It does not explain:
- Runtime collapse. Full charge but the laptop dies in an hour when it used to last five.
- Sudden shutdowns at 20 or 30 percent remaining.
- A charge percentage that jumps around, 60 to 15 to 40 within minutes.
- Physical swelling. A trackpad that clicks strangely, a case that won’t sit flat, a bulging bottom panel. Stop using the laptop and bring it in, swollen cells are a safety issue, not a quirk.
- No charging at all, which can be the adapter, the port or the battery, and is worth a proper diagnosis rather than parts roulette.
What a real battery job costs
ASUS battery replacement at our workshop starts from $249, fitted, capacity-tested and calibrated, usually same day when your model’s battery is in stock. The $85 inspection applies as our minimum labour charge and comes off the repair.
