ROG and TUF laptops make real power in a small box, and the price is acoustics. Under a gaming load, strong fan noise is simply the design working. The skill is telling healthy loud from unhealthy loud, because one is physics and the other is a repair bill that grows the longer you ignore it.
Healthy loud
Fans that spin up hard when you launch a game, stay roughly proportional to what you’re doing, and settle when you stop: normal. Performance modes (Turbo in Armoury Crate) that trade noise for frame rate: normal. A TUF that’s louder than your friend’s ultrabook: extremely normal.
Unhealthy loud
- Roaring at idle. A desktop with browser tabs shouldn’t sound like a benchmark run. That usually means heat is trapped: dust-matted fin stacks or spent thermal compound making the fans fight a losing battle.
- Surging. Fans cycling up and down rhythmically while the workload stays constant.
- Rattles, buzzes and clicks. Bearing wear. A fan that’s noisy in a mechanical way is on its way out, and a dead fan takes your thermal headroom with it.
- Loud AND slow. Fans at maximum while frame rates drop is thermal throttling: the machine is protecting itself by giving up performance. The hardware isn’t worse, it’s hotter.
The liquid metal factor
Here’s the part specific to modern ASUS gaming machines: many recent ROG (and some TUF) models ship with liquid metal on the CPU instead of conventional paste. It’s a real performance advantage, and it changes the service rules completely. Liquid metal is electrically conductive, migrates if mishandled, and must never be mixed with or replaced by ordinary paste on a whim. A generic repaste tutorial can genuinely kill these boards.

When to book it
If your ROG or TUF is two or more summers old and any of the unhealthy patterns sound familiar, it’s due. Thermal service starts from $219, most are same-day, and the difference under load is usually dramatic: cooler, quieter, and frame rates back where they belong.
