OLED Zenbooks are gorgeous, and they generate a very specific kind of anxiety. Owners arrive at our Perth workshop worried about burn-in, dimming, or flicker on screens that are, in many cases, behaving exactly as designed. Here’s how to tell the difference between OLED being OLED and a panel that genuinely needs work.
The “flicker” that isn’t a fault
OLED brightness works differently from LCD. At lower brightness settings, OLED panels pulse their light output faster than the eye can consciously see. Some people perceive it as shimmer or flicker, especially in dim rooms at low brightness, and some cameras catch it as banding. That’s the technology, not a defect. If the flicker is new, constant, appears at all brightness levels, or comes with lines and artefacts, that’s different, and worth a look.
Burn-in: rarer than the internet suggests
Modern Zenbooks ship with a stack of protections: pixel shifting, screen savers, taskbar dimming and refresh routines in the MyASUS app. Genuine burn-in on a laptop used normally is uncommon. What we see more often is temporary image retention, a ghost of a static window that fades within minutes. Persistent ghosting that never fades is real burn-in, and on a panel that young it’s worth checking warranty coverage before paying for anything.
Symptoms that do mean repair
- Coloured vertical or horizontal lines. Panel or cable fault, not software.
- Half the screen dim or dead. Panel driver failure.
- Flicker that tracks lid movement. The display cable through the hinge, a far cheaper fix than a panel.
- Cracks. Obvious, but worth saying: OLED cracks spread, and a damaged OLED can develop expanding dark blotches. Book it in early.
